Ghostwritten is a complex, interconnected narrative that spans the globe, featuring nine different characters in nine different locations, including a cult member in Okinawa, a jazz buff in Tokyo, a British investment banker in Hong Kong, an old woman running a tea shack in China, a transmigrating spirit in Mongolia, a ghostwriter in London, a physicist in Ireland, a late-night radio DJ in New York, and a noncorporeal entity in a global network. David Mitchell was born in Southport, Merseyside, in England, raised in Malvern, Worcestershire, and educated at the University of Kent, studying for a degree in English and American Literature followed by an M.A. in Comparative Literature. He lived for a year in Sicily, then moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where he taught English to technical students for eight years, before returning to England.
