Set in Depression-era Kentucky, the story follows a group of women who become part of the Pack Horse Library Project, delivering books to remote mountain communities. At the heart of the narrative is Alice, an Englishwoman who finds herself in a stifling marriage and a foreign land. As she joins the library group, she forms deep bonds with the other women, particularly the independent and spirited Margery. Together, they face numerous challenges, from treacherous terrain to societal opposition, while discovering the transformative power of friendship, resilience, and the written word. Through their journey, the women not only bring knowledge and hope to their community but also find their own paths to freedom and fulfillment.
Moyes studied at Royal Holloway, University of London. She won a bursary financed by The Independent newspaper to study journalism at City University and subsequently worked for The Independent for 10 years. In 2001 she became a full time novelist.
Moyes' novel Foreign Fruit won the Romantic Novelists' Association (RNA) Romantic Novel of the Year in 2004.
She is married to journalist Charles Arthur and has three children.
